Playing with your parakeet may seem a little boring at first, but once you get to know your parakeet, it can lots of fun.
Hand-train your parakeet .
Take your bird out of the cage by pushing your index finger on your bird's lower stomach. He/she should step onto your finger.
Make sure he/she is comfortable and relaxed.
Put him on top of the cage and start talking to him. This may seem silly, but it will show that you are being friendly.
After about 20 minutes, let him go back into the cage. If you do this everyday, you and your parakeet will be very close.
Make sure you give it a lots of food and water and spend a lot of time with it.
Tips
- Remember that your parakeet is much smaller that you are, so don't blame him if he is scared of you.
- Try whistling a little and clicking your tongue.
- Make sure you do nothing to make your parakeet angry. Often a parakeet will show its discontent by opening and closing its beak in a threatening way, squawking, or biting, so you may want to use a glove.
- (Only do this if your bird is hand fed.) If your bird doesn't want to get on your finger and you have to chase him/her around the cage with your hand, try taking it out of the cage and put a stick in front of it show the treat and it'll walk towards the stick and gets the treat and lift the stick to get him perched, try practicing this method then use your finger.
Warnings
- Before letting the parakeet out, make sure that if you have a cat, he/she is in a different room with the door closed. Also make sure no windows or doors are open. It's a good idea to pull the curtains down, as your parakeet might fly into the glass.
- Make sure to cover up any mirrors, or the parakeet will fly into it.
- Make sure there are no stoves on or toilets open so that your parakeet's safety is ensured.
- You really should never grab your parakeet - they get very very scared if you do this! The trick here is to build trust. If you grab him you will lose that trust!!
